Here are some thoughts to get insight into what info your employees want most:

  • First of all, HR should informally swing by directly to employees and ask a few questions.
  • Schedule meetings. Spend 30 minutes with co-workers from different teams to find out what kinds of questions they have and what they’d find useful.
  • Send a survey. Create a survey and share via email.

Some questions you can include:

  • What do you like about the current newsletter?
  • Which information is the most relevant to you?
  • Do you question what other departments are doing?
  • How often would you like to get updates?
  • What do you think the company does well?
  • Is there an area that you think the company could improve on?
  • Do you think the morale in your department/company is good?
  • If you think morale is low what do you think could improve it?

And finally…..

  • What are your key motivators?

I think this is a particularly important question to give your staff.

One important outcome here is understanding what drives your employees. Some employees may be able to answer this question without missing a beat, but others will be overwhelmed by such a deep question with so many potential answers.

If that’s the case, you can mention that people tend to be driven by four main motivators:

  1. Money

Opportunities to turn a profit or increase personal wealth.

  1. Mission

Opportunities to create high-level change, often on a global scale.

  1. Relationships

Opportunities to build meaningful interpersonal connections.

  1. Creativity

Opportunities to think outside the box and push the boundaries of innovation.

Understanding what it is your employees care most about can help you push them towards excellence at work.
