If our employees can perform to the best of their abilities on a consistent basis then we have the ingredients for our business to become or maintain success. In order for us to achieve this we must insist on clear and precis goals to ensure that our employees understand fully what expectations the business has of them and work standards are expected.

The opposite of this is also true, if we have high expectations of our staff but fail to clearly communicate the goals and standards required it could leave the business with staff who are disillusioned, produce poor levels of productivity and demonstrate low morale. This could be as a result of not managing the process correctly and leaving us with employees who have lost faith in the process we are trying to implement.

Benefits to the Business of a Good Performance Appraisal Process

  1. The correct performance appraisal will motivate our employees, increase morale and therefore increase productivity levels for the business.
  2. The review itself could allow the employee the opportunity to provide their own feedback and observations in the process. This often proves useful in numerous businesses especially if they can feedback knowledge beneficial to the business.
  3. The performance review could be used to provide specific development opportunities within the business if we can get them to communicate their future aspirations and goals.
  4. The performance process documentation itself could be used to protect the business should there be any claims from employees of discrimination or unfair treatment accusations.
  5. The process also allows the business to record and document all of the performance issues, disciplinary actions, grievances raised or set goals against the individual.
